It is 6:30AM in sleepy San Miguel de Allende, and somewhere not too far away, someone woke up this morning and decided that Sunday morning was a *great* time for a fireworks display! Close enough to hear but not close enough to see over the walls of the adjoining casas. This was joined by some church bells, presumably a call to Mass.
I am sipping coffee in the kitchen which is an enclosed room off of the courtyard, which is filled with bouganvilla, lime and avocado trees. I will post pictures before we go to breakfast.
Last night, on the recommendation of our host Laura, we ate at La Brasilla (remember, two l’s together is pronounced with a y) and enjoyed tacos al pastor (pork) con queso with various sauces (mole, green chile, etc.). The pork is on a large spit vertically and the outside is broiled/braised by what appeared to be an in-wall bathroom heater turned up until the flames reached out and seared the meat. The carver was expert. His left hand would pick up a tortilla from the grill and use it to turn the pork a few inches. In his right hand the knife would slice several pieces of pork from top to bottom, all of which he caught on the tortilla. He would then reach up and cut a couple of slivers off of the pineapple mounted above the pork, which he deftly caught in the tortilla before depositing this on a plate. It was interesting to watch, although I’m sure it got old to him after awhile.
We bought some instant coffee and milk at a gas station and stored those in the kitchen refrigerator. It beats walking half a mile for coffee this morning.
Soon I will post pictures, I promise!
